Question Numero Uno

A lot of artists hold their cards close to the vest. But you're all about sharing. Like in your "Don't Touch My Computer Home Users Guide," you tell your fans how to recreate the works in your show at at Thaddaeus Ropac gallery in Paris. What's up with that?

My art is really an art of process. Therefore I think the best way for me to express this is through tutorials teaching people to recreate the work. It also allows the work to exist naturally in an internet setting without feeling forced. If you search the intneret it is littered with tutorials on how to make everything from homemade airconditioning to sweaters. Therefore if I am going to do a gallery show, to me it just makes sence (because remember, I am most comfortable ont he intenret) to make a document teaching people how to do it themselves. Also in regards to the Ropac show, I put 3 works that could be digitally recreated at home. So for example one of the works was a video processing piece that used the movie Colors as its base. So the Users guide asks people to go buy the same Colors DVD as I did, rip it, and then point at that ripped file the small program I wrote to genereate the new movie. Therefore, they get to see the magic happen themselves at home. And it is really this transformation of source media to my media where the art experience lies. So not only am I teaching people, I am giving them actually quite a bit more valuable experience with the work. As for this idea of artists keeping their cards close to their chests, I dont know, I guess I just come from a pre-Bill Gates copmuter world where the nerd-hippies still ruled the landscape and all infomation was free. I am not in anyway worried about giving this info away. Also I think in terms of contemporary art, process isnt as important anymore as ideas. I mean anyone can put a urinal in a gallery, just not anyone would think of that. (Though, it should be noted, I also tell people HOW I thought of my ideas in the Dont Touch my Computer Home USers Guide,....so maybe even the ideas are OK to give away.....hahahaha....)
